In a lot of cases, the amount you prepare for an interview is the difference between getting an offer and being shown the door. As Employment experts, we know it’s a good idea to put aside a bit of time for interview preparation. However, it can be hard to know how to get started! This blog aims to give you a great starting point that will help you land that role!
“Tell us about yourself!” is likely to be the first question in any job interview so you should have a great answer prepared. Ensure that part of your pitch gives a summary of the most relevant work background for the role and maybe even something that shows you know about the culture of the company and how you’ll fit.
The second most common question will really expose whether or not you have done your homework. “What do you know about the company?” Be certain you’re not caught of guard by this question by finding out:
- What the company does
- Which markets or areas of service it works in
- If it’s local, regional, national or international
- The company’s core aims and values?
- Its main competitors
Having great answers to these questions shows you want to be prepared and know how to take initiative.
The next usual question is designed to test your understanding of the industry, the company you are applying for and your role within the organisation. When a prospective employer asks “what is your understanding of this role?” You will need to have an accurate response without repeating the job description verbatim. Go through the processes you would use on a day-to-day basis to do the job properly.
Some questions sound pretty general and a good interviewee will be able to link this to the role they’re applying for. When asked what challenges you have faced, ensure it’s applicable to your industry. When asked your strengths and weaknesses, consider what is needed for the role.
When asked what you could bring to the role, don’t be shy about showing your best attributes. Talk about the skills you have along with any areas that you feel piqued your interviewer’s interest during the process.
It is also important to look at what you can ask the interviewer! Be sure to ask them to clarify is you’re unsure about a question and see what opportunities are available on a longer-term basis.
